Best Pre-Med Colleges in New Jersey
Princeton University
Established in 1746, Princeton is one of the oldest universities in the U.S. As one of the smaller Ivy League schools, Princeton intentionally focuses its resources on undergraduates, as evidenced in its 5:1 student-faculty ratio. The university boasts robust Health Professions Advising, which provides students “all things pre-health.” Pre-med support ranges from professional staff to a formal network of peer advisers to Jock Docs, a peer advising program designed especially for student-athletes on the pre-med track. An impressive 84% of Princeton graduates were accepted into medical school over the past five years.
Rutgers University
Rutgers is a Big Ten University, meaning it is a large state school and is heaping with school pride. As the “Birthplace of College Football,” there will be plenty of opportunities to face paint and tailgate, though when it comes time to get down to business, Rutgers students get the job done. Stevens Institute of Technology
Stevens is a small, private research university in Hoboken, New Jersey, just across the Hudson from Manhattan. While known for being highly selective, students who make the admissions cut have a high chance of success. For the 2019-2020 academic year, graduates from the Biology and Chemical Biology Programs enjoyed a 100% acceptance rate to medical schools around the nation.
New Jersey Institute of Technology
The state’s public polytechnic university, NJIT provides a strong, STEM education that caters to students who are interested in practical, technology-based skills training. The school has a competitive 7-year accelerated BS/MD program that requires 3 years at NJIT followed by 4 at the New Jersey Medical School or Rutgers School of Dental Medicine; alternatively, students can choose an accelerated plan that blends 3 years at NJIT with 2 years at St. George's University (Caribbean Islands) and 2 years at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark. The Albert Dorman Honors College—also highly competitive—provides 100% of students with merit scholarship packages.
Seton Hall University
A small, private Catholic university, Seton Hall is one of the oldest universities in the country. The school’s Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program offers financial aid to qualifying New Jersey residents to prepare historically underserved students for careers in the health profession. To further foster inclusion, the university offers a formal shadowing program (Shadowing Physicians to Educate and Elevate Diversity; S.P.E.E.D.) for underrepresented students in medicine. The College of New Jersey
The College of New Jersey is a small, suburban public university located on the Delaware River, just 40 minutes northeast of Philadelphia. The school partners with the New Jersey Medical School to offer a 7-year combined BS/MD program, though the majority of pre-med students follow traditional four-year undergraduate degrees with a 65% acceptance rate to med schools.
